You Should Be Here It’s been one year since God called you home. And I’m not saying God is wrong. What I’m saying is you should be here. You should be here because you have missed so much. You missed Greyson’s first Halloween, his first Thanksgiving, his first Christmas and New Year. You missed his first steps. You should see how big he’s gotten and hear how much he talks now. You should be here. But it isn’t only the milestones you’ve missed. You’ve missed the love. The cuddles, the hugs and the kisses. The laughter that comes from simply being inside Greyson’s little world. The smiles of this little boy would melt your heart completely into. I wish you could see the happiness in his face and hear that little laugh for yourself. And I know it’s the same with every grandchild you left behind. Whether it’s cheer games, football, basketball, another milestone, or simply being there day to day—helping with the small things just as much as the big things. There is so much life happening here that you should be a part of. For me, though, I didn’t only lose Greyson’s Ganz. I lost my mom. And maybe one of the hardest parts is that I was a new mom who still needed her mom. I was still learning how to be somebody’s mom while suddenly having to learn how to live without my own. I lost my sounding board. My best friend. The person I could count on. The one who always had my back. This year has been incredibly difficult without you. There have been so many times I’ve wanted to call you, tell you something, ask you something, or just hear your voice. Then I remember I can’t. I wish I understood why you had to leave us when you did. I wish we had gotten more time. There was still so much left for you to see. I know I can’t put into words everything your other grandkids have missed the way I can with Greyson, because he’s the little life I see every single day. But I know your absence is felt in every one of their lives. Greyson misses his Ganz. And God, I miss my mom. These photos were taken December 13, 2008. These two girls were foreign-exchange students at David Crockett High School in jonesborough,Tn during the 2008–2009 school year. We became incredibly close, but this was before social media was really part of everybody’s life and we eventually lost contact after they went home. I’ve never forgotten them. I’m 34 now and going through old family photos, and finding these made me realize that after all these years, I still wonder where they are and how their lives turned out.
