Burt Bacharach has passed away. He was an extremely gifted writer with a beautiful understanding of classical music and form - one of my favorite songwriters whose music I grew up with. Burt asked me to be the pianist for his Broadway show Promises Promises. Like an idiot, I turned it down. This is a portion of Alfie, my favorite song of his from a performance I did with Gail Ann Dorsey in 2004 on a day off touring with David Bowie in Australia. It is a very sad day with the passing of Wayne Shorter - a jazz master. While he lived a full, beautiful, and creative life, it is a tremendous loss for his family and the jazz community. For over six decades, he pushed the boundaries of music with unparalleled creativity, leaving an indelible mark on music. From Wayne’s work with Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Herbie Hancock, his music was inspired. One of his most iconic compositions, "Footprints," has been on my mind a lot lately. I've played it at least a hundred times over the last few months, inspired by its beauty and depth. I'd like to share this live performance of the song where you can feel how Wayne’s music has already touched the next generation through the performance of two gifted young teenagers, Jack Lieberman on tenor sax and Max Gilbert on drums, along with myself on piano and Kevin Walt on bass. This is a small homage to a true genius. Wayne’s music will continue to inspire and move generations to come. I wish him well on his journey… Love, Mike

One of my most cherished memories with David was our concert on July 3, 1973, at Hammersmith. Now, half a century later, fans will be able to re-live that iconic night exactly 50 years later when the newly restored version of the film debuts from the very same stage. David was so nervous that night. He asked me to warm up the audience by myself with a piano medley of his songs. I was terrified, but he confessed to me later that he was even more nervous for me than he was for himself. While that performance may not have made it into the original Ziggy Stardust film, I’ll get my sweet revenge by opening the world premiere of the film on July 3, just as I did all those years ago! My performance and our panel discussion will be followed by the film, all broadcast to theaters throughout Europe that night, with additional screenings worldwide throughout July, reaching more than 1,000 screens.
