On the market for the first time ever was this mid century modern home in Selwyn, ON (just North of Peterborough), designed and built by architect Ernest Jenkins for his family in 1966. In the late 60s the architect and family found a lot located near their design center, and the view from here reminded them of their native New Zealand vistas. The farmer who owned the parcel at the time agreed to sell them the lot where the Jenkins family then built this house. The house has unique architecture all around, with clerestory windows, warm wood ceilings, cork flooring and original features exceptionally well cared for over the years. The sunken living room was added last and has more sweeping views of the land surrounding this mom home. The original art mural installation in the living room is made from remnant materials from the build and was completed by Roger Mesley in 1966. At the time Mesley was a grade 13 student and the architect, Mr. Jenkins, was a big supporter of Mesley's work. Mesley went on to become an art historian and professor, and has recently become aware that the installation in this home still remains. This modern property became home to James Goldstein in the 70s and Jimmy worked with Lautner for years to restore the architecture to its full potential. The Sheats Goldstein Residence, originally designed in 1963 by John Lautner, exhibits some of the finest examples of modern architecture; with poured-in-place concrete furniture, frameless glass windows, and a long list of design features that were and still are ahead of their time. Some might call the home space age in style, or brutalist inspired, and in many ways, the home blends indoors and out. After all, Lautner's early career did include an apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright. But the house is unlike any other, and it's one of the most interesting examples of Lautner's work. And that's especially since Lautner returned to the property over 15 years after it was built, working with current owner, James Goldstein, to remodel the home and bring the architecture and design to its full potential. The home sits on roughly 1.6 acres backing on to Martindale Pond. The architect designed this home for his own family, alongside a sister property next door for their best friends. Around the time of construction, the homeowners who commissioned this house asked Schefter for “a home that will draw us outside.” The four bedroom, 3 bathroom home was designed in stages, and first featured an angular greenhouse designed to support passive solar heating for the home.
