Just because you're attending supervision doesn't mean you're getting what you NEED from supervision. 👀 Good supervision should challenge your thinking, strengthen your skills, and provide meaningful feedback—not just check a box. Grad school is NOT just about getting through the classes, completing your internship, and collecting that MSW. You're supposed to be building your career, not just earning a degree! Start networking with your professors, get involved in professional organizations, ask questions, participate in class, and be intentional about the experiences you pursue during your internship. Your professors and field instructors aren't necessarily just there to give you grades and sign paperwork. Some of those relationships can and will open doors YEARS after graduation. Your MSW program is an opportunity to build your professional network, reputation, and future. Use ALL of it! Listen, I’m not trying to make everything about race. But I’m also not going to pretend race has nothing to do with some of the things we experience as social workers. I've been doing this work for 30 years, and to this day, I still encounter people who look at me and question whether I'm actually the person qualified to conduct a psychiatric evaluation. I can usually tell the difference between someone being confused about my role and someone questioning my authority. And sometimes, it's not what they say. It's that they keep questioning, even AFTER I've explained who I am and what I do. Because apparently, I just couldn't possibly be the person making the treatment recommendation based on my assessment. I know I am not the only one!
