October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month 💚 18 months ago, we had never even heard of cholangiocarcinoma. We were blissfully unaware until one day, Mom was diagnosed, and it changed our world forever. Mom was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer of the bile duct, which is classed as a primary liver cancer. A cancer with tragically poor prognosis and survival rates. We fought for every treatment, every opportunity and every chance we could to save Mom. Sadly, this cancer is so aggressive that it took our beautiful Mom, Katie, from us. Mom was just 49 years young. She would tell you herself that she had the best life. She loved life, and all she ever really wanted was her family and her health. That was all that mattered to her. Devastatingly, Mom stopped responding to treatment, and after a 10-month fight, we lost her. Throughout it all, we had an incredible team behind her, led by Professor Shivan Sivakumar, and we will always be grateful for everything they did for Mom. Mom didn’t deserve this, nor does anyone else affected by this cancer or any other cancer. We urgently need more awareness, more research and more funding into rare cancers. No other family should have to face what we have, and no one should have to lose someone they love to a cancer that we still know far too little about. I hope that one day we can find a cure for CCA, and that no one else has to hear the words that their cancer is incurable. I was just 22 years old when I lost Mom. I will spend more of my life missing her than I ever got to spend with her. That is something I will never be able to make peace with.
