Head to longrangescience.com for the full rundown Bullet jump is how far the bullet must leave the case once fired before it hits the rifling. With the tapered lead angle and the ogive shape of the bullet, that distance varies for each bullet type, weight, manufacturer, and seating depth. To know your jump, you have to know where you actually start running into the lands. But how do you know where that is? #longrangeprecision #longrange #longrangescience #bulletjump
Newest addition to the competition rig. MDT send it level! Should be quicker to check level without having to break position #precision #longrangeprecision #longrange #precisionrifleseries
What does bullet stability in flight look like? When a bullet comes out of the barrel, it doesn’t do it perfectly. The stability factor is used to tell us whether those imperfections correct themselves, remain the same, or increase to full bullet instability. Stable: twist rate and gyroscopic forces are enough to settle the bullet. Marginal: Not enough to fully correct itself, but it can prevent increasing error. The excessive yaw angles are also why BC is not optimized in this region. The erratic flight path causes extra drag on the bullet, reducing it efficiency in the air. Unstable: when a twist rate is too slow, the gyroscopic forces aren’t enough to overcome the other forces causing the bullet to tumble. Leads to non existent accuracy and “keyholing” in targets down range Learn more on longrangescience.com

Bullets are statically unstable during flight. With the center of pressure ahead of the center of gravity, the bullet naturally wants to tumble. To prevent this we must add angular momentum, which is done by spinning the bullet. But how much is needed is based on a few factors. Air density (pressure and temperature), bullet weight, and bullet length are the main things that matter. Typically longer bullets need more spin because the center of pressure is further from the center of gravity causing more torque. More air density also requires more spin because there is now a greater force trying to overturn the bullet. Unstable with most likely tumble. Marginally stable doesn’t always mean tumbling, but the bullet will potentially have some wobble that will effect the drag. Fully stable is where the BC is going to be optimized.
