What if reality is bigger than what we can currently observe? Science is extraordinarily powerful, but it operates through observation, measurement, testing, and evidence. History gives us an important lesson in humility. Bacteria existed before microscopes. Radio waves existed before radios. Gravitational waves crossed the universe before we could directly detect them. Reality does not begin when humans discover it. But this does not mean undiscovered natural phenomena prove angels, jinn, or the supernatural. That would go beyond the evidence. The deeper lesson is more careful: Not detecting something is not automatically the same as proving it cannot exist. Philosophy asks whether the limits of our instruments are necessarily the limits of reality itself. Islam distinguishes between the seen and the unseen, with belief in the unseen grounded in revelation rather than laboratory experiments. Science investigates what is empirically accessible. Philosophy examines what we can reasonably know. Faith addresses realities and purposes that empirical methods alone may not settle. Reflect: Are we humble enough to distinguish between we have not observed it and it cannot exist? Could the giraffe make you think differently about design? 🦒 To keep its brain supplied with blood several meters above its heart, the giraffe lives with unusually high blood pressure and a remarkably specialized cardiovascular system. Then it lowers its head to drink. Gravity changes the problem completely. Yet through coordinated blood vessels, vascular resistance, pressure regulation, and other physiological adaptations, blood flow to the brain remains controlled. Then the giraffe raises its head again, creating the opposite cardiovascular challenge. Science investigates how these adaptations work and evolutionary biology investigates how such traits can develop across generations. But philosophy can ask another question: Does explaining the mechanism explain the ultimate existence of the mechanism? Why does nature possess laws capable of producing and sustaining extraordinarily integrated living systems? Islam does not require us to reject biological mechanisms to see Allah in creation. The Qur'an repeatedly invites us to observe animals and the natural world as ayat, signs. For the believer, understanding the mechanism does not diminish the meaning. It reveals another layer of creation to contemplate. Science investigates the mechanism. Philosophy investigates its implications. Islam invites us to reflect upon the Creator. The giraffe is not a scientific proof of God. But its extraordinary biology can become an invitation to wonder, humility, and reflection. Not merely design. Why does the Quran compare humanity on the Day of Resurrection to scattered locusts? Surah Al Qamar presents a striking image: humanity emerging from the graves in enormous numbers, compared to scattered locusts. The biology is fascinating. Locusts lay their eggs in the soil. Under favorable conditions, large populations hatch, develop, gather, and can eventually form enormous swarms. But accuracy matters. Adult locusts do not suddenly burst from underground. Eggs hatch into wingless nymphs before developing into flying adults. And we should not present locust biology as a modern scientific discovery that proves the Quran. The deeper power is in the imagery. Multitude. Movement. Emergence. Helplessness before the command of Allah. Science can explain locust development and swarm behavior. Philosophy can ask whether resurrection is logically impossible and what it means for human existence. Islam teaches that the One who created us the first time is capable of bringing us forth again. So reflect: If Allah created us when we did not exist, why should recreating us be difficult for Him? If your wealth, reputation, possessions, and status disappeared tomorrow, what would remain of you? And if resurrection is near, what are you preparing to bring before Allah?
