According to report, the scandal centred on the illegal issuing of visas in exchange for money. The paper claimed that anyone who could pay about $3,000 (roughly ₦240,000 at the time) could get a visa through the “back door.” The paper reported that four British citizens and six Nigerians had already been linked to the racket. Some diplomats were reportedly sent back to London, and British detectives were brought to Nigeria to investigate and identify more suspects. Embassy spokesperson John Wattam admitted the visa section had been “polluted.” Anthony Goldman, a Financial Times correspondent in Lagos, described the scandal as unfortunate because it came while Britain was urging Nigerians to embrace transparency and accountability. The report also captured the frustration of ordinary applicants. Some said strict visa conditions pushed people toward the back door. One applicant, who needed to travel to Britain for heart treatment, said he would pay if offered a visa for $3,000, and urged the embassy to relax its conditions as the only way to stop such corruption.
