People love to tell shift workers all the reasons why working nights is bad for them. But telling someone “night shifts are unhealthy” without giving them any support or solutions isn’t actually helpful. Most shift workers don’t have the option to just stop working nights. They still have careers they love, patients they care about, and lives they want to enjoy outside of work. That’s why I share what I do. Because you can work nights and still look after your health. You can build a routine that works around your work schedule, fuel yourself properly, train consistently, and feel like yourself again. Follow @laura_shiftworkercoach for realistic shift work advice from a fitness coach who actually gets it. 🫶🏼 #shiftworkers #onlinecoach #fyp #nightshift #healthcareworker
I’m a nurse, I work shifts, I run a business and in 4 weeks I’m competing at Turf Games! I don’t have the luxury of training at the same time or on the same days every week. Some weeks I can train 4 times, whereas other weeks I have more shifts or commitments and I have to adapt around them. And this is where our idea of what “being consistent” means as a shift worker can actually make consistency feel so much harder. We expect consistency to mean training the same number of times, having set training days, meal prepping on the same day and hitting the same targets every week. So when our shifts change and we can’t do everything we’d planned, it feels like we’ve been inconsistent, and that’s when the all or nothing thinking creeps in. “I’ve already missed 2 sessions.” “My nutrition has been all over the place on nights.” “I’ll start again properly on Monday.” But Monday comes and you’ve got 3 long days ahead of you, so you’re waiting for another week where you can finally do everything “properly”. I can’t train for Turf Games like that. If I waited for the perfect week to follow my training exactly as planned, I’d turn up on the 10th October VERY unprepared. So instead, I look at my shifts, my training, the business and ask myself: What does moving towards my goal realistically look like THIS week? Sometimes that’s all 4 sessions. Sometimes I need to move or shorten one, and sometimes rest needs to take priority. It doesn’t mean I’ve stopped being consistent. I’m still working towards the same goal. And your goal doesn’t have to be Turf Games. Maybe you want to lose 10kg, run your first 5K, get stronger, have more energy or simply get back into a routine with the gym. You don’t have to put that goal on hold until you finally get a “good” week. Your weeks WILL look different when you work shifts, and learning how to work with that is what allows you to keep moving forward. If this is something you struggle with and you’re never really sure how to plan your health & fitness around your shifts, comment STRUCTURE below and I’ll send you my FREE training on how to structure your week around a rotating shift pattern. #shiftworkers #onlinecoach #fyp #nurse #structure
Shift work isn’t easy. Neither is trying to follow advice that isn’t designed for your lifestyle. Being told to just be consistent, skip meals, and go to the gym after your shifts, it’s not realistic, and it’s not sustainable. That’s exactly why I talk about this, because I understand the challenges and reality of shift work. We give so much to others, it’s time we start taking care of ourselves too.
