They told Biddy Mason she was enslaved. Then she learned California’s law said she couldn’t legally be held that way. She fought for her freedom in court in 1856. And she didn’t stop there. She became a nurse, midwife, landowner, philanthropist and one of the most important figures in early Black Los Angeles. She went from property to property owner.
