No🃏 A New Orleans necromancer enters a haunted-house competition to save her sister. 🕯️ Nine trials. Nine circles of hell. One devilish phantom. 🎭 ACOTAR meets Caraval, with OCD rep that BookTok has rightly lost it over. If you've been on BookTok at any point in the last eighteen months, this cover has been thrown at you. And — annoyingly for cynics like me who get suspicious of viral books — the hype is mostly earned. Phantasma is the first in Kaylie Smith's Wicked Games series, set in a paranormal New Orleans, and it does exactly what it says on the gold-foiled tin: gothic, gory, spicy, properly inventive, and a hell of a lot of fun. Ophelia Grimm is a necromancer. Her younger sister Genevieve disappears into Phantasma, a deadly haunted-house contest with a single wish as the prize. Two rules: stay alive, and don't fall in love. Ophelia signs up to bring her back. The trials are themed around Dante's nine circles of hell, the house generates new monsters every day, and a charming, arrogant, infuriatingly attractive phantom called Blackwell offers her a bargain: ten years of her life, in exchange for guidance through the games. Reader, she takes it. Where Smith really earns the hype is the OCD representation — Ophelia's intrusive thoughts and compulsions are baked into how she navigates the trials, not slapped on as flavour, and that lifts the whole thing above standard romantasy. The prose can be a touch heavy-handed in places and a couple of twists are more telegraphed than they think they are, but honestly? The atmosphere, the Big Easy backdrop, Blackwell, and the morally-grey-men-of-it-all carry the day. Why @KlacksReads recommends: Because if Caraval was your gateway and ACOTAR was your church, this is the haunted side-chapel you've been looking for. Light a candle. Roll the dice. Definitely do not fall in love. 🕯️🃏 KlacksReads 05 May 2026 #booktoker #fyp #booktok #bookrecommendations #bookish
✉️ An epistolary novel for people who think they don’t like epistolary novels. 🧓 Sybil Van Antwerp, 73, writes letters every morning — to family, friends, university presidents, and famous authors. 🐌 The sleeper hit of 2025–26 — a slow‑burn word‑of‑mouth phenomenon that eventually reached No. 1 on the New York Times list. 🎬 Jane Fonda film adaptation announced March 2026; winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel. This is the literary‑fiction fairy tale of 2025. Virginia Evans had written seven unpublished novels and was, by her own account, close to giving up and applying to law school. Then Crown published The Correspondent — quietly, in April — and over the next eight months, entirely through word of mouth, it climbed from obscurity to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. No celebrity book club, no splashy hook. Just readers pressing it into other readers’ hands. The reason becomes clear by page twenty. Sybil Van Antwerp is a retired lawyer in her seventies who writes letters every morning: to her brother, her best friend, the university president who won’t let her audit a class, her favourite authors, and one person to whom she writes constantly but never sends a single letter. She is prickly, funny, razor‑sharp — and, as her correspondence unfolds, carrying a grief she has spent thirty years refusing to look at. It won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel. Ann Patchett has raved. Jane Fonda will play Sybil in the Lionsgate adaptation announced in March. If you normally bounce off books told in letters, trust the hundreds of thousands of readers who didn’t. This is a novel about writing yourself toward forgiveness — a structure far more propulsive than it sounds. ✨ An epistolary novel that makes you believe in epistolary novels again. ‼️ A sleeper hit that rose to No. 1 on pure word of mouth. Why @klacksreads recommends: Because this is the novel serious readers have been pressing into each other’s hands — and Jane Fonda is about to make it unmissable. 🎂 An exclusive black-tie Sweet Sixteen. A sprawling Texas mansion. 🥂 A body falling from the balcony. 🧪 Dani (post-partum psychosis), Kim (alcohol), Orlaith (the elderly Irish nanny), and more… 🏆 Instant USA Today Bestseller. A Library Reads Pick. Debut of the summer. Kelsey Cox's debut is a locked-room whodunit transplanted into a glittering Texas Sweet Sixteen, and it has been pushed by US critics as the next Big Little Lies meets Rebecca. The comparison is slightly hyperbolic but the structural ambition is genuine — Cox rotates multiple narrators, lets each woman's guilt feel total while simultaneously undermining her own testimony, and keeps the reader guessing which guest is the killer and which is the body. The cast is richer than the setup suggests. Dani is the tenacious new mother with a history of postpartum psychosis; Kim is the ex-wife with an alcohol problem; Orlaith is the elderly Irish nanny who has seen things she should not tell anyone. The book is sincerely engaged with postpartum mental illness, which several reviewers noted Cox handles with care rather than using as a plot gimmick. Set against a backdrop of Texan wealth that Cox — a Texas Hill Country resident — draws with acidic accuracy. An instant USA Today bestseller, an Indie Next Pick, a Library Reads Pick, and a Most Anticipated by People, Goodreads, Glamour, Book Riot and Fresh Fiction. Pair it with Mara's Such a Nice Girl for an 'opulent-party-one-mother's-nightmare' double feature — they'd make a deadly bookclub pairing. 👩🏼💼 Rebecca meets Big Little Lies — an intoxicating alchemy." — Katie Gutierrez 🏆 A debut that wasn't always unpredictable, but is always stylish. Why @klacksreads recommends: Because this is the Texas-opulence whodunit every thriller reader has been recommending all summer — and Cox handles the subject matter (postpartum psychosis, gaslighting) with real care.
