Look at some of the hardest hitters in baseball and pay attention to what happens BEFORE the swing. There’s a common theme in their loads. They coil without a big negative move, then create a strong, controlled stretch forward. When your load starts with a big move backwards, it can quickly turn into a sway. Now your head is moving unnecessarily, your body has to change directions, and you’ve added more movement that has to be timed with the pitch. Instead, we want to coil where we are, gather into the backside, and allow that coil to create a controlled move forward. And gaining ground forward does NOT mean crashing toward the pitcher. The forward move should be smooth and controlled. You’re creating stretch while keeping your body in a strong position to hit. Your head isn’t flying forward and your weight isn’t getting dumped onto your front side. ✅ Coil + controlled forward move: ✅ Limits unnecessary head movement ✅ Creates stretch without swaying ✅ Keeps you balanced while gaining ground ✅ Gives you time to recognize the pitch and make a good swing decision ❌ Sway / aggressive forward move: ❌ Creates unnecessary head movement ❌ Forces your body to change directions ❌ Causes you to crash onto the front side ❌ Makes timing and pitch recognition harder This is where timing and swing decisions come into play. Your body can be moving forward while your eyes are still gathering information. You’re getting yourself into position to hit without committing your swing too early. That’s huge. You can recognize velocity. You can recognize location. You can take a ball. And when you get the pitch you’re hunting, you’re already in position to attack it. Coil without the sway. Stretch forward under control. See the pitch. Make a decision. Then attack. Your turn needs to work DOWN into the ground not UP and out of it. One of the biggest ways hitters lose power is by standing up during rotation. As the swing starts, the body comes up, the legs straighten too early, and everything starts pulling away from the ground. Now instead of using the ground to help create the turn, you’re losing your connection to it. We want the opposite. Think about rotating down into the ground. A good way to feel this is to imagine someone put a screwdriver on top of your head and is screwing you into the ground as you turn. You’re rotating, but that rotation is working down into the ground instead of pulling your body up and out of it. ✅ Rotate DOWN: ✅ Maintain your posture through the turn ✅ Keep pressure into the ground ✅ Create a stronger, tighter rotation ✅ Transfer more force through the baseball ❌ Rotate UP & OUT: ❌ Stand up through the swing ❌ Lose connection with the ground ❌ Pull your body away from the baseball ❌ Leak power before it reaches the barrel This doesn’t mean you’re trying to squat during your swing or force yourself downward. It’s about maintaining your angles, staying connected to the ground, and using it to your advantage. Power comes from the ground up. The better you use the ground, the better you can transfer force from your lower half, through your hips and torso, and eventually into the barrel. If your turn is taking you up and out, you’re moving away from your power source. Think screwdriver. Turn down into the ground, maintain your posture, and let that force work its way back up through your body and into the baseball. Use the ground. Stay connected. Let your power work from the ground up. Joey Ortiz has turned it around after the All-Star break, and this side-by-side shows some important changes in how he’s loading and delivering the barrel. The biggest difference is how much better he’s staying within his body and keeping his hands quiet. In the older swing, there’s a lot of vertical movement. His body works down → up → back down, while his hands also work down, then up, before having to get back into position. That’s a lot to organize before you even hit the baseball. Now look at the newer swing. He’s staying taller and much quieter. As he starts his controlled move forward, his hands simply work back as his body moves forward. That creates stretch without needing a bunch of extra movement. ✅ NEW: ✅ Stays taller and within his body ✅ Hands stay quiet and work back as he moves forward ✅ Creates a stronger, more controlled stretch ✅ Stays behind the baseball as he starts his turn ❌ OLD: ❌ Body works down → up → down ❌ Hands have unnecessary vertical movement ❌ More movement that has to be timed ❌ Has to recover position before delivering the barrel And that’s the important part. Quiet doesn’t mean passive. He’s still creating a strong move forward. He’s still creating stretch. But now he’s doing it from a much better position. Instead of fighting unnecessary movement, he can stay strong behind the ball, turn behind it, and deliver the barrel from behind and THROUGH the baseball. Sometimes the biggest adjustment isn’t adding more. It’s cleaning up what happens before the swing so you can actually let the swing work.
