I’m a single mom. I’ve buried two babies. My surviving son, Liam, spent 208 days in the NICU. He lives with medical fragility, adrenal insufficiency, a g-tube, and so much more. I’m in school. I’m doing everything I can. But the new legislation terrifies me. So I’m asking not as a voter, but as a mother: Can you promise me my son’s medical supplies won’t be cut off or delayed? Can you promise his nursing hours, the ones that let me sleep, study, and keep him alive, will stay intact? Can you promise his doctors won’t drop Medicaid because of low reimbursement rates and leave us with no one who knows how to manage him? Can you promise I won’t lose his benefits for daring to get an education? Can you promise families like mine won’t slip further into poverty just for trying to survive? Can you promise I’ll have a say in life support if I ever face another hopeless NICU battle? Can you promise I won’t be investigated for going into premature labor or for having a miscarriage? Can you promise I’ll get emergency care before I’m coding? Can you promise I’ll be able to finish nursing school without losing the supports I depend on to get there? Can you promise Pell Grants and education programs won’t be stripped from the people who need them most? Can you promise me that moms like me won’t keep dying while lawmakers debate whose life matters more? Can you promise my son’s IEP, therapies, and school supports won’t vanish with “budget cuts”? Because if the answer is yes, I want to know how. And if it’s no, then just admit it: You’re not fighting for us. I’m not asking for a handout.
