The “Benson 1941” underpass was part of a major highway interchange built on the east side of town. It helped mark Benson’s shift from a railroad-centered town to a stop on the busy highway routes crossing southern Arizona. In 1940, the Arizona Highway Department planned the interchange to sort out traffic where US 80, State Route 86, a city street, and the Southern Pacific Railroad came together. The project included two adjacent underpasses, designed to keep highway traffic from crossing the railroad tracks at grade. The railroad underpass carries the “Benson 1941” inscription. ADOT records say the contractors finished the structures and approaches in January 1942. So “1941” is the project’s commemorated year, even though final completion may have followed a little later. #bensonaz
