Quick story time🥹: On Juneteenth I was on FaceTime with my mom while getting ready to hit the golf course and meet up with my rooseveltwineclub fam. The topic of her retirement came up and I suggested she find a similar group, since I’ve been having such an amazing time. To my surprise, her immediate response was “They don’t want to see my black face there.” My mom was born before desegregation and the Civil Rights Act were passed, living through and experiencing a time when many of the opportunities I have today weren’t an option for her. These words were a jarring reminder of how little time has passed since that era of American history and how important it is for all of us to continue to be loud, proud and to take up the space that is our God-given right.
