This is Joel Meyerowitz one of my favorite street, landscape and portrait photographers of the late 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. He got his start in photography after watching a photoshoot construct by Robert Frank (another highly esteemed photographer). Meyerowitz was inspired by his Bronx and New York City early childhood and quickly took to the streets in search of his own decisive moments. His early career was shot predominantly in black and white which was the status quo for “serious” artists of the time. However, he found that he preferred to shoot in color graded film because it seemed to be more of a service to see the world as it is. Unfortunately, he was ahead of his time and was seen as someone who didn’t take the art form seriously because only commercial photographers shot in color graded film and they were not seen as “artists” during the late 60’s and early 70’s. It wasn’t until William Eggleston and John Szarkowski released their exhibitions and first books in color that color photography was taken seriously. In 1979, Meyerowitz published his first photo book titled “Cape Light” and it was an instant hit. It went on to become one of the most influential photography books in the history of photography and is studied today to understand the effects color, light and composition can have on your subject. After Cape Light he went on to publish several more books including Provincetown, Bystander, Where I Find Myself, and St. Louis and the Arch just to name a few! However, his most powerful work is Aftermath. The days after the tragedy of 9/11 nobody from the press or journalists were allowed inside of ground zero. This was because it was still deemed a crime scene. Upon his initial arrival at ground zero Meyerowitz was turned away, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer. He quickly became friends with many of the first responders and people working within ground zero. They would bring Meyerowitz into ground zero and would vouch for him if NYPD gave him trouble. #photography #photographybooks #nyc #photographersoftiktok #booktok #streetphotographer #newyorkphotography #youtubersentiktok #journalism

Photographed by documentary and art photographer Jared Thomas Tapy, this mini series titled “What’s Left Is The Worlds” focuses on the waste that’s left behind from humans while spending a day at the beach. The series was photographed in late 2021 in New Smyrna, Florida, one of the beaches that Tapy frequently visited throughout his youth growing up in Florida. Tapy would drive an hour and a half from his childhood home in central Florida early in the morning to get to the vehicle accessible beach before many of the tourists and locals were awake so that he could parole the sand for what had been left the day before. To his dismay he found countless amount of litter, food waste, plastics and dead sea life that had washed ashore, many of which had remains of plastic or other waste visibly inside of them. Tapy made this short series before moving to Georgia to finish his book “Melancholy” because he felt that it was important to remind his peers and the population that what’s left behind becomes the worlds problem and its effects on wildlife and environment that waste is left in can be devastating. #photography #photographybooks #photographersoftiktok #journalism #climatechange #earthday #savetheworld
