Trafalgar Day is an annual British commemoration held on October 21st to celebrate the Royal Navy's historic victory at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. Led by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson aboard his flagship HMS Victory, a British fleet of 27 ships decisively defeated a larger combined French and Spanish armada of 33 ships off the coast of Spain. The triumph fundamentally thwarted Napoleon Bonaparte's plans to invade Britain and secured British naval supremacy for more than a century. Before the engagement began, Admiral Nelson famously signaled his fleet with the phrase: "England expects that every man will do his duty." During the height of the chaotic melee, Nelson was mortally wounded by a French sniper bullet to the spine. He lived just long enough to hear confirmation of his fleet's complete success, famously uttering, "Thank God I have done my duty" before passing away. While Nelson’s death plunged the nation into mourning, the victory solidified his legacy as one of Britain's ultimate war heroes and cemented the event as a cornerstone of British maritime culture. As someone who struggled with a stutter after my TBI, I want to bring this into the light. Established in 1998, the day is dedicated to raising public awareness about stuttering (also known as stammering), eliminating societal discrimination, and supporting the roughly 1% of the world's population (80 million) who live with this neurodevelopmental speech difference. The theme for this year's observation is "Stuttering comes in many shades," highlighting that no two people experience stuttering in the exact same way, and that many significant struggles remain unheard. The day was originally designated by a coalition of organizations, including the International Stuttering Association (ISA), the International Fluency Association, and the European League of Stuttering Associations. Every year from October 1 to October 31, an independent team of volunteers hosts the ISAD Online Conference, allowing advocates, clinicians, and people who stutter to share research and personal stories. I stand with you all! ✊ #international #stuttering #awareness #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #isad
