A little more on the Prairieland case, because not enough people know about this abject injustice: “Last year on the Fourth of July, a small group from Dallas-Fort Worth held a night-time noise demonstration, setting off fireworks outside the Prairieland Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility south of the cities, in solidarity with the detainees. A few protesters broke away and spray-painted graffiti on employees’ cars and a security post, slashed the tires on a government van, and broke a security camera. The facility’s guards ordered the protesters to disperse, and most of them did. When a police officer arrived at the scene, drawing his gun, an armed protester sh** her r*fl3, hitting the officer in the shoulder. The officer survived. After a three-week trial, a jury found eight of nine protesters guilty of “providing material support to t3rr0rists”, among other crimes. For the Sotos, this “material support” included owning a “printing press” used to print an*rchist zines and being part of a leftist book club, the federal government argued. The couple had already left the scene by the time guns were drawn. All eight of the defendants sentenced so far have received unusually harsh sentences – 30 to 100 years – essentially life in prison.” - The Guardian Another defendant received 30 years for moving a box of zines. Anyone can join (and comment at) the meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 16 – the Philadelphia Historical Commission will listen to public comments as they discuss whether to recommend that “We The Youth” be added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places. The decision will be voted on by the entire commission on October 9. If approved, it would be the first time an outdoor mural in the “Mural Capital of the World” would receive the commission’s protection. At the height of his career in the 1980s, Keith Haring joined up with 14 high school students to paint a mural in a quiet pocket of South Philadelphia. The artist intentionally passed over better-trafficked areas of the city, instead selecting a wall on a residential building in the historically Black neighborhood of Point Breeze. A year after painting his legendary “Crack is Wack” mural in New York City, and three years before he died from AIDS-related complications, Haring drew bold, black outlines of his signature dancing figures that students filled in with bright colors and patterns. “Whatever else I am,” the artist once wrote, “I’m sure I, at least, have been a good companion to a lot of children and maybe have touched their lives in a way that will be passed on through time, and taught them a kind of simple lesson of sharing and caring.” #keithharing #murals #publicart #philly #southphilly
