To every VBS volunteer this summer: thank you. 🙏 Because here’s my parenting strategy — once summer hits, I sign my kids up for every VBS within a 10-mile radius. Non-denominational, Baptist, Pentecostal, whatever’s open. Different church every week, same goal: keep them busy and growing in the Lord. And the people making that possible? The volunteers. The ones who show up early, stay late, and pour into kids who aren’t even their own. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. I spent years trying to please everyone. It nearly cost me the person God actually made me to be. Here’s what finally broke the spell: if Jesus, perfect, sinless, God in the flesh, still couldn’t get everyone to approve of him, why am I treating my own approval rating like it’s possible? It’s not. It was never the assignment. Chasing everyone’s approval doesn’t make you humble. It makes you a watered-down version of the design God already signed off on. And the exhausting part is you never actually arrive. At some point you have to make peace with being the villain in someone else’s story so you can be obedient in God’s.
