As many of you know I am Greek. I grew up taking pride in my Greek heritage, and culture. I’ve read every mythological story, and history. I’m so mad about the casting and the inaccuracy of the armor, ships, and some of the dialogue. Nolan’s team also had the opportunity to work with a famous Greek blacksmith and historian Dimitrios Katsikis. They reach out to Dimitrios and then later ghosted him. The biggest issue I have is not 1 Greek actor is casted for this movie. And a lot of people have said “were you upset with the casting of Troy. Clash of the titans, wrath of the titans? Etc” The answer to that is all yes. It drives me crazy to hear people say “well if you want a Greek movie so much with Greek representation you should make your own movie…” that’s not how it works. If I could I probably would. But being in the Booktok space for as long as I have I’ve heard the same things over and over “well if you aren’t of a certain culture, or race you shouldn’t be telling their stories.” And yet… majority of people are in support of this movie. The producers of Moana wanted to represent the movie and the culture of Polynesian and indigenous people of Hawaii. They did the proper steps. So why is it… we couldn’t have that for the Odyssey? Why is it so wrong for us Greeks to want to see proper representation? Is it because we are listed under Caucasian and people believe that Caucasians don’t have culture? You know how many books a read that are Greek retellings? Some of them are good and stay on point while others are I don’t even know what. Where are all the people who scream for diversity equality and inclusion now? Where are all the people who screamed at white authors who wrote black characters saying “it’s not your culture, not your story to tell?” I’m so tired of everything being such a one way street. Many Greeks are upset and outraged over this movie. I myself will not be seeing it. It’s a slap in the face to us Greeks and its disgusting that many of you can’t see it. When through you fight for proper representation in other books, movies and tv shows… where is your support for the Greeks? I have nothing against the actors, I think they are all very talented and I’ve watched many movies, tv shows etc with them all in it. So it has nothing to do with them. They applied for a role and they got it. I just would have liked to see my culture actually represented in a movie. It’s 2026 diversity also means keeping stories accurate to the original in some form. Yes it’s mythology, but Troy was a real place. There is some truth to mythology. It’s based off something from somewhere. They are stories passed down generation to generation. Us Greeks are rich with pride of where we come from and our stories. #theoddyssey #greekpride #greekculture #greece #booktok
