🐻‍❄️❄️ It's that time of year again.   Neva has moved into her denning suite as denning season begins at Rocky Shores. As winter approaches, female polar bears naturally seek out quiet, sheltered spaces where they can rest and potentially give birth and care for cubs during their earliest months.   Polar bear reproduction is complicated, and many things have to go right. While we don't know if Neva is pregnant, our team is supporting her natural instincts every step of the way. Female polar bears can gain up to a third of their body weight before denning, and this year Neva reached 822 pounds before heading into her den.   To support her instincts, our animal care team transformed her den into a calm, dark, soundproofed sanctuary with specialized cooling controls that mimic a frozen Arctic snowbank.   While Neva spends time in her denning space, guests can still visit Nikita at Rocky Shores.   At the heart of everything we do is Neva and Nikita's wellbeing. We're taking this process one step at a time, remaining cautiously optimistic, and are prepared to support the polar bears in whatever situation is best for them. 🤍   #utahshoglezoo #hoglezoo #polarbear #denningseason #rockyshores
