Cockroach’s for breakfast, seasoned with @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. ReptiCalcium and ReptiVite! These supplements ensure the lizard get all that they need to live healthy lives, grow properly, and continue to successfully lay eggs and reproduce! The roaches in this video are Red Runners, a favorite of so many of my lizards. I use them more of a treat only because I don’t want to keep track of thousands of them… a few escaped crickets I can deal with… escaped roaches… no thanks!

I love anoles and so should you! There's so many reasons why this group of lizards is so fascinating, but the dewlap is an obvious and defining feature of the genus Anolis. All except 2 species of anoles have a "dewlap" (did you spot the one in the video without one?). A dewlap is just a flap of skin on their throat that can be extended, which they use for territorial displays, mating rituals, and other forms of communication. Dewlaps come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Manually extending dewlaps does not hurt the anoles or cause any sort of discomfort; it's no different than lifting your arm if it was relaxed. It may be a bit annoying to them, but for a few second clip to share their beauty with the internet, I think they'll understand!

Join me as I build an easy step by step waterfall enclosure for a pair of Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni, commonly known as Fleischmann's glass frog or the northern glass frog! I'm using a 12x12x24 paludarium and the waterfall kit from @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. to create this enclosure. I believe an enclosure like this can be easily constructed by just about any level of hobbyists at home; though not the most extravagant, the simple background and easy choice of plants makes this a beginner level enclosure to maintain. And it will be perfect for this pair of frogs to hopefully make some babies in! Time will tell. Stick around for some updates!

I doubt you knew that you can see into a micro gecko egg! This is an ashy gecko egg, and with some light you can see the beautiful striped pattern of the baby inside. Unlike a lot of other reptile eggs which are soft and leathery, micro gecko eggs are hard shelled like a bird egg. And once the gecko breaks through, it's crazy to imagine that tiny gecko stuffed in that even tinier egg. Just another fun aspect of keeping and breeding these neat creatures.

I’ve been super fortunate to have started hatching annulated geckos (Gonatodes annularis)! The babies don’t look like dad initially, but they’ll grow into absolute stunners. I experimented a bit with incubation, and seems like it worked out! I get countless messages asking questions about incubation, and I’ll almost always recommend the Reptibator by @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. because it really is just a great incubator. For beginners, it is very intuitive and straight forward and performs consistently. And for advanced keepers, I’m sure many would chime in and agree it does just about all you can ask for from a small light weight incubator. Looking forward to growing up this baby gecko and can’t wait to share what else might hatch this 2026 season!

Feeding your feeder bugs is one of the most important steps in caring for your reptiles! This is called "gut loading" and increases the nutrient value of the crickets. I often switch up the fruits/vegetables week by week to add different nutrients, and one thing I've been adding is @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. Bug Balance and Cricket Boost. Bug balance is formulated to have just about everything you can imagine might be missing from your common feeder bug. And the cricket boost is an easy way to keep the bugs hydrated while gutloading. Anyone who has tried to keep crickets alive for more than a day knows how fast they can crash without enough water… the jelly fixes that while offering nutrients rather than plain water crystals. Of course, dusting with calcium is important, especially for my egg laying females. Whatever reptile you keep, look into the food you're feeding them and assess if you can make it better! Because increasing the quality of their diet will show in their behavior, color, and overall quality of life!

Meeting of the minds 🦎 one thing these dwarf green anoles (Anolis isolepis) can all agree on is their love for @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. crested gecko food! As you can see, it's not just for crested geckos! A lot of my anoles love geckos food, and of course there are many other geckos and lizards who love it as well.

The beauty is in the details 🔬 often times, others wonder why they should be interested in anole lizards. And my answer always has a few bullet points! There is not just one reason that makes these lizards incredible; rather it is the combination of all the amazing features in one small package. The colors, patterns, textures, structures, scalation, intelligence, personality... all these things add up to create an animal where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This video shows a couple of the macro, physical aspects that can easily be overlooked when observing the whole. The intelligent design behind it all is undeniable to me. I hope this video gives you a little perspective on the cool parts of a few different anoles, and maybe it's worth taking a second look at something you've often overlooked and start finding the beauty set in the details!

Doing some tank maintenance and health checks on all the adult Chinese crocodile lizards today, and couldn't help but appreciate how beautiful they are. One part about them that I have always loved and that isn't mentioned or shown much are their belly scales and belly patterns. The belly scalation also resembles that of a crocodile, and the patterns and colors can be so variable between individuals. With quite a few females looking very round, I'm hopeful to find some babies in enclosures in a month or two! Praying all goes well and more of these amazing miniature dinosaurs are born so more people can enjoy them. Really probably the most enjoyable species I've ever kept and I think will only become more and more accessible thanks to more people taking captive breeding seriously.

When I decided I was going to build a @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. Purevue rimless aquarium for some of my favorite shrimp, I knew I had to learn more about them first. And there was very little video of them in the wild or up to date information about them. So I hopped on a plane to Hawaii and found them myself! These are Hawaii’s “volcano shrimp”! Referred to in Hawaiian as “opae ula” and scientifically known as Halocaridna rubra. They can only be found in Hawaii in very specific brackish pools which are fed by cracks in volcanic lava rock connected to the ocean. Opae ula can live in these cracks underground for years (hence the name “volcano shrimp”) and eventually surface to the brackish pools to feed. Unlike most tiny creatures who are short lived, these shrimp can live for over 20 years due to their extremely slow metabolism and only needing to eat very very small amounts of algae to survive. These are some of the hardiest aquarium inhabitants on the planet, and I just had to see them in nature for myself. After learning a bit about them in the wild (longer form video can be found elsewhere wink wink) I felt equipped to better keep them at home. I already had a small tank with some, but upgrading to the 12 gallon rimless Pureveu… I couldn’t mess this up! I I’m really happy with how the tank turned out. The dimensions of this tank really display well. And the sleek design of both the light and tank make it the perfect addition to my home. The shrimp will eat the algae in the tank as long as the light runs, and all I have to do is make sure to top off evaporated water. No filter, no feeding, no water changes. Really that simple. If you’ve never heard of these shrimp before, I hope you enjoyed learning something new! And if you want to see more video of Opae ula in the wild, please check out the long form video!

Check out all these cute baby micro geckos that just hatched! Depending on temperature and species, the eggs take about 2-3 months to hatch. Once these little creatures pop out, they’ll be removed from their incubation containers to be set up in small deli cups with soil and leaf litter. There they’ll be misted and fed multiple times every week until they’re a few months old and are either ready to find a new home or be upgraded to a larger enclosure here. This time of year is crazy at HerpTime with several dozen baby geckos hatching per week at times!

Time to feed some aquatic lizards… OK, I lied: no these aren't lizards, or axolotls, but rather newts! Even though they're not axolotls, they still love the @Zoo Med Laboratories, Inc. axolotl pellets which are designed for aquatic newts as well! They can be a little clumsy to start but they always eventually figure out how to eat. Just as fascinating to me as lizards, I have a small collection of a few newt species I’m raising. They are being kept in bare bottom tanks as this is easiest to keep clean and some more “beautiful” builds are in the works (so stay tuned for those videos). Similar to most of the animals I keep, newts are a watch and enjoy pet rather than a hold and play with pet. Nonetheless, just as enjoyable and rewarding to keep, some with lots of personality! Which newt in this vid is your favorite? Thanks for watching!
