There’s a kind of exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix. It comes from being the dependable one. The strong one. The one who keeps showing up, answering the calls, meeting the deadlines, caring for everybody else, and saying, “I’m fine,” because explaining what’s really going on feels like one more thing to manage. And sometimes, nobody notices because you’re still functioning. That’s why we have to stop using productivity as proof that someone is okay. This Suicide Prevention Month, check on the people who don’t “look” like they’re struggling. Check on the friend who keeps laughing. The parent who keeps providing. The professional who keeps performing. The person who is always there for everybody else. And when you ask, make room for an honest answer. You don’t have to fix it. You don’t have to have the perfect response. Just be willing to listen, stay present, and help them connect with support when they need it.
