The sign promised me doom but all I got was waterfalls and a fairy tale forest... Good thing those kinds of hikes are my FAVORITE!! I never skip this trail when visiting Hickory Run State Park in the Poconos region of Pennsylvania. This 2.2 mile hike is rated moderate on @alltrails because it requires navigating some slippery rooted sections, but the overall elevation gain is only 262ft. Why is it called Shades of Death Trail? Early colonists called the area "Shades of Death" because of its dark forests, swampy terrain, and rocky land that was difficult to farm. Dramatic much?? Dogs are allowed on this trail, but must be leashed at all times in Pennsylvania State Parks. Bears are active in this area so practice bear safety: never approach or feed wildlife. Every time I visit the Hudson Valley Region I’m extremely overwhelmed by how many options there are to choose from. I plotted MUST see spots for my most recent trip and checked them all off (well, most of them…) and while there is still SO much more I need to explore, I left feeling like I’d had the perfect trip with zero regrets about any of these stops. If you’ve got a thing for fall foliage then let me tell you about Black Moshannon State Park in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Excuse me?! 😍 The Bog Trail at Black Moshannon is a 0.5 mile boardwalk that will take you past carnivorous plants, berry bushes, and more birds than you can count… 📍Black Moshannon Bog Trail on @alltrails 🥾0.5 miles out and back, 3 ft elev gain 🐾Dogs ARE permitted on the trail but MUST be on a physical leash at all times for their safety and to help preserve the bog. ⚠️While you’re there, stop by the EnChroma Color Correcting Viewfinder…installed to help red-green colorblind visitors get a more vibrant view of the amazing fall foliage Pennsylvania has to offer! It can be found on the dock along Westside Road on the drive to the Bog Trail.
