The most important part of training happens after the trainer leaves. On the next shift. In the classroom. When a child is overwhelmed and the person beside them needs to decide how to respond. That’s where I want RiskAware to make a difference. I’m Glenn Mitchell, co-founder of RiskAware Training & Consultancy. I bring more than 20 years of frontline, leadership and training experience, including delivering training on Home Office contracts in safeguarding, mental health, and suicide and self-harm awareness. I also work as a House Lead supporting children with complex needs, significant trauma and self-harm risks. That experience shapes how I teach: practical examples, honest conversations and space for staff to ask the questions that matter to them. People need more than information. What helps someone feel safe enough to tell you something difficult? Sometimes safeguarding starts with an ordinary moment. A conversation while making lunch. A quiet check-in after a difficult day. Noticing someone seems withdrawn and taking the time to ask how they are. We can’t assume people will tell us when something is wrong. We need to make room to listen—and know what to do when they do. Working in children’s residential care has taught me how much those everyday interactions matter. Training needs to help staff recognise concerns, respond thoughtfully, record clearly and follow the right reporting process. “You’re here today—but will you still be here when things get difficult?” A child may never ask that out loud. Yet trust can grow through the everyday moments when an adult listens, keeps a promise or reconnects after a difficult interaction. In children’s residential care, I see how much those moments matter.
