When a standard proper pruning cut is made just outside the Branch Protection Zone the tree can compartmentalize and seal its wound naturally, no wound dressing!! The Branch Protection Zone falls between the branch bark ridge and the branch collar. These two points are formed when a branch grows from the stem. Between these two points the tree has chemical and physical properties that allow it to seal the wound. Taking this cut too close to the stem or trunk would be called a flush cut and it is a big no no! Flush cuts are very susceptible to decay which will affect the trunk and thus, the overall health of the tree. Your tree does need pruning, but it needs proper pruning to maintain good health. Did you know about the Branch Protection Zone? #treecare #certifiedarborist #fruittrees #pruning #citrus #cut #verynice #gardeningtips #pruningtips
Pruning tip! Prune out one of two branches that is growing with an acute angle between them. As they grow in diameter they can start to mend together creating included bark which is an inherently weaker branch architecture. With included bark, there is a higher risk of full tree failure if one of the branches fails. This is an important tip when pruning young and juvenile trees to prevent the possibility of included bark. Mature trees that already have included bark should be pruned to manage weight distribution to avoid one branch being more weighted than the other. As a mature tree with included bark gets older, it may be suggested to cable the branches that share the included bark. #treecare #certifiedarborist #fruittrees #pruning #gardeningtips #pruningtips
When pruning your tree, it can be easy to get caught up in the fun of pruning and prune too much! Best way to keep track is to keep your trimmings in a little pile and every so often, take a step back and look at what you have pruned. In Arboriculture the rule of thumb is to prune no more than 25% in one year. With stone fruit like this peach, we will usually prune about 10% in Winter and another 5-10% in summer to thin out the bushy growth these babies put on in the warmer months. #treecare #certifiedarborist #fruittrees #pruning #stonefruit #peachtree #millionsofpeaches #peach #pruningtips #gardeningtips
