When posting videos of yourself signing with beginner ASL, the best thing you can do is clarify in the video or caption that you are still learning, that your ASL is likely not accurate, and that people shouldn't try to learn ASL from you and should instead learn from Deaf teachers. Video description: Ceres is a white teenager sitting in front of the camera and signing in ASL. They have short brown hair with blue streaks and are wearing a black bleach-dyed shirt with several necklaces. Transcript: What’s the difference between ASL, SEE, and PSE? Many people learning sign language are exposed to these three terms and get easily confused. I’ll explain. ASL is American Sign Language. It’s a real language used by the Deaf communities of the US and Canada. ASL and English are different languages: ASL has its own vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure, distinct from English. ASL is also different from other sign languages of other countries, like BSL (British Sign Language) or Auslan (Australian Sign Language). SEE is Signed Exact English. SEE is not a real language, it’s a system of language that uses signs from ASL, but strictly follows English vocab and grammar. Fingerspelling is used to fill in the gaps where ASL doesn’t match English. For example, in ASL one would sign Store - I - GO, whereas SEE would sign: I a-m GO-i-n-g TO t-h-e STORE. Again, SEE is not a real language; it’s meant to be the “visual version” of English. PSE is Pidgin Signed English. Similar to SEE, it uses ASL signs but with English word order. PSE is common amongst people who are learning ASL, because they know the vocab but aren’t yet used to the grammar. Again, PSE is not a real language, it’s just a blend of ASL and English. When ASL students post videos practicing their signing to songs, it’s typically more SEE or PSE than true ASL, because they’re trying to follow the English lyrics word for word, which isn’t accurate. A true ASL interpretation follows the meaning of the lyrics rather than the words themselves. End transcript. #ASL #AmericanSignLanguage #SignLanguage #PSE #Deaf

thats not to say EVERYONES interpretation is accurate... because when ASL starts trending, most people's videos are complete gibberish. but there is never ONE singular "correct" way to interpret any song, audio, or dialogue into ASL. because its up for interpretation 🤷 Video description: Ceres is a white teenager lip syncing the audio in a very fed up manner with corresponding text on the screen. He has short brown hair with blue streaks tied half up in two buns and is wearing a grey hoodie over a black bleach-dyed shirt with layered necklaces. The text says: "Why is everyone's ASL interpretation different? Which one is correct?" SHHHHH Look closely!! Really closely!! It's an asl INTERPRETATION. And if multiple people are interpreting something into ASL, then each interpretation is going to be slightly different. Because everyone interprets things differently. og harry potter haters stand UPPP we r rare but we r REAL!!!!!! Video description: Ceres is a white teenager talking to the camera. They have light brown and blue hair hair mostly tied back with bangs and two thin braids in front and are wearing a purple shirt with matching purple earrings and layered necklaces. Overall looking very cool and stylish. Transcript: All this discourse about how you have to give up Harry Potter because J K Rowling is transphobic is really fucking irritating to me because I NEVER LIKED HARRY POTTER TO BEGIN WITH. Even as a child I knew that shit was terrible. Like I liked all sorts of fantasy novels. I liked the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, I liked Percy Jackson, I liked the Warrior Cat series. But when my parents tried over and over and over again to get me to read Harry Potter, I said fuck no. Like I think I read the first book and I got like halfway through the second before I just gave up, and i never TOUCHED the movies. So I think if you're really struggling to give up your Harry Potter obsession, that's on you for having shit taste. End transcript. #HarryPotter #JKRowling #Transphobia #TransRightsAreHumanRights
