Bringing your dog to a crowded public event means being responsible for how their behavior affects everyone around them. A dog repeatedly barking, growling, snarling and lunging at other dogs is telling you it is not ready for that environment. Responsible dog ownership includes recognizing when an environment is too much for your dog and creating distance. For guide dog teams, this matters even more. Guide dogs are responsible for safely guiding blind and visually impaired handlers through already challenging environments. They should not also have to navigate uncontrolled dogs lunging and snarling at them while they work. Not every dog belongs at every event, and recognizing that is part of responsible dog ownership. #GuideDog #ServiceDog #DogEtiquette #ResponsibleDogOwnership #DisabilityAdvocacy [VD: Bodycam footage at a crowded outdoor festival shows Fozzy, a large black guide dog in harness, guiding Erica through a busy street lined with vendors and pedestrians. Another dog on leash barks, growls, snarls and lunges toward Fozzy as they pass. Fozzy continues guiding through the crowd and later does a full-body shake-off. The video cuts to Erica speaking to the camera from inside a parked car. On-screen text reads, “Hot take: If your dog does THIS, it’s not ready for a crowded public event.”]
A $46 Lyft ride was already an expense I couldn’t avoid because I don’t drive. Then a driver read my message about my guide dog and canceled. I made it to my doctor’s appointment late, and afterward came the screenshots, emails, and phone calls to Lyft to report the discrimination. That’s the disability tax: the money, time, and work disabled people spend on things that should be straightforward. What’s a disability-related cost people rarely think about? #DisabilityTax #GuideDog #ServiceDogAccess #RideshareAccessibility #DisabilityAwareness [Video description: Erica wears a black top and speaks directly to the camera in a well-lit room. Opening text reads, “I considered leaving my guide dog home so I could get to the doctor.” Photos and stickers appear on screen throughout the video to illustrate her story.]
