Every now and then these birds go rogue 😅

‘Tis the season for “scritch me I’m itchy, no ow don’t touch me, wait now scritch me, ow no not there, wait yes scritch me please scritch me” 😅 For those that aren’t aware, these are pin feathers. Parrots like Indian Ringneck parrots molt their feathers once a year during summer. It’s a gradual process. As the old feathers fall out, new ones grow in, wrapped in their little sheaths. These are called pin feathers. The blackish colour is because the quills are full of blood. As they grow, the blood drains, the sheath falls off (like bird dandruff) and the feather emerges. Pin feathers seem to be quite tender to touch when they still contain blood but once that drains pet birds seem to love being scritched, which helps to break off that little crusty dandruff sheath and help the feather to open out. That’s what I’ve noticed with these two pet birds anyway.
