It seems strange to some people that I would set a romance novel about a black queer couple in a time and a place where blackness and queerness were both suppressed and demonized, but I think we do our ancestors a disservice when we only think about them in terms of their oppression and their pain. Within both the Black communities and the queer communities there has always been joy. There has always been light and there has always been love, and those are the stories that I want to tell. I want to tell stories of bright, beautiful love even in dark times. Love is not new for us. Happiness is not new for us.
