As a bilingual school psych who has been part of district level bilingual assessment teams, I unfortunately see schools make many mistakes when it comes to the equitable assessment of our ✨Multilingual Learners✨ (or English Learners, ELLs as many say, but I dislike those terms 😝) Two of the most common mistakes are: 1️⃣ Ignorning the student’s cultural and linguistic background all together and giving the same battery of tests to all students no matter what, and 2️⃣ Seeing the EL/ELL designation on their file and automatically assuming they can only be tested nonverbally or in their home language BOTH of these mistakes can be harmful ❌ because they fail to consider the student as an individual and how their cultural and linguistic background makes some tests better than others to capture their true abilities.
