The Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics, within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), conducted a site visit to SOILCO Materials Investigations in Pinetown on 28 September 2026. About 160 second-year Transport Technology 2B students, accompanied by four Civil Engineering staff members, attended the visit. The experience offered students hands-on exposure to critical laboratory practices, including asphalt testing, concrete testing, and Marshall briquette testing, among other advanced procedures. These demonstrations highlighted the importance of precision in evaluating materials used in infrastructure projects, ensuring durability, safety, and compliance with engineering standards. SOILCO’s team guided students through the processes, explaining how test results inform design decisions and construction quality. The practical engagement allowed students to connect classroom theory with industry application, deepening their understanding of geotechnical and materials engineering. #dutebe #CivilEngineering #Geomatics #thefutureliveshere
