A few things that regularly mixing has taught me over time.⬇️⬇️ 1️⃣ A lot of mix problems are volume problems. Before reaching for another plugin, turn something up or down. Embarrassingly often, that’s the whole fix. 2️⃣ Mix quiet. Loud mixes often lie to you…everything sounds ‘huge’ and ‘exciting’. Turn it down, listen properly and hear the real balance show up. 3️⃣ References don’t lie. If your mix feels thin or muddy next to a record you love, that’s important info, not an insult. 4️⃣ Stacking processing isn’t the goal. EQ, comp, saturation are all tools, not a list of ‘must haves’. Some of my favourite mixes have less happening than you’d think. 5️⃣ Not everything needs fixing. A slightly wild transient or an “excessive” frequency isn’t automatically a problem. Context decides, not the meter. 6️⃣ A great mix can’t save a bad arrangement/song. If a vocal’s not sitting right, sometimes it’s not the plugin chain, it’s the 40 other things crowding it out. Sort the arrangement first. 7️⃣ Your ears clock out before you notice. The longer the session, the worse your judgement gets. Walk away, come back fresher. 8️⃣ “We’ll fix it in mastering” is a trap. Mastering elevates a good mix, it can’t often rescue a bad one. 9️⃣ The mix doesn’t need to impress you, it needs to serve the song. Don’t get in the way of what’s already great, just elevate it. 🔟 The last stretch can take as long as everything before it. Getting from “good” to “done” can take hours.
