The adoption of Restorative Justice by public school districts has resulted in unintended consequences. While it’s intention initially was to correct the disproportionate suspensions and expulsions of children of color and those with disabilities. An honorable endeavor, however they swing pendulum too far and the damage is real. For over a decade, the children in our society have been taught that their actions result in zero consequences. Professors nation-wide have been questioning why it seems their incoming cohorts believe that rules don’t apply to them. Why they believe grades are negotiable and behavior is irrelevant. The public school system has failed our children once again by taking on a program that they never properly funded or implemented and relieving schools of all other safeguards well mandating that they adopt these new methods. School districts have used the phrase Restorative Justice, simply for the optics of it, but have left the system to crumble in its wake.
