7/22/26 RICHMOND— Virginia is honoring a Richmond soldier who gave his life trying to save a fellow soldier in Morocco by flying flags at half-mast on Wednesday. On Wednesday, July 22, flags outside of all of Virginia’s local and state government buildings are to be lowered to half-mast in honor of 27-year-old Kendrick Lamont Key, Jr. of Richmond, according to a July 21 flag order from Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s (D) office. Key, who was a U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant and platoon leader, is one of two soldiers who died tragically on May 2 near the Cap Draa Training Area in Morocco. He was deployed there as part of an annual multinational training exercise called African Lion. According to Spanberger’s office, Key died trying to save a fellow soldier, who the U.S. Army has identified as 19-year-old Mariyah Collington of Taveres, Florida. She was a specialist who worked in air and missile defense. That day, Collington fell from the coastal cliffs of the training area and into the Atlantic, per the flag order. “Without regard for his own safety, [Key] directed his platoon in an improvised rescue and moved to secure her himself before both were tragically lost in the ocean,” Spanberger said in the flag order. Both Key and Collington’s bodies were later found in a coastal cave about 500 meters from where they fell into the Atlantic, the U.S. Army said. For his heroism, Key was posthumously awarded the Soldier’s Medal, which is the highest recognition of heroism outside of combat. “His final act, undertaken to protect a fellow Soldier in his care, stands as the fullest measure of a leader and a true testament to how much he cared about his unit,” Spanberger said. “Lieutenant Key will be remembered as a courageous, natural-born leader. We honor his devoted and selfless service to his community, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America. My heart is with his friends and family, who should know a grateful Commonwealth is indebted to him and thanks him for his service and sacrifice.” #neverforget #usa #military #virginia #thankyouforyourservice❤️🤍💙
