Well this isn’t the post I expected to make so soon after leaving the hospital. We were discharged on Thursday afternoon and back in a hospital on Friday afternoon. Beau has a large abscess in his abdomen. Something that can happen after someone has an appendectomy with a ruptured appendix. So here we are again. Exhausted. Defeated. The plan is that sometime tomorrow (Sunday) interventional radiology will insert a drain into the abdomen to start removing the fluid. Because of the deep location in the pelvis they will have to go through the gluteal muscle. There is no safe route through the front. This sweet boy is enduring too much. It’s not fair. Our family is exhausted and under incredible stress for so many things. Sunday August 23rd update. Today was potentially going to be drain placement day. But after waiting all day and being NPO, they couldn’t do the procedure. There was a miscommunication between doctor teams about the fact that Beau needed full anesthesia and not conscious sedation for this procedure. I ordered him his favorite pizza - Casey’s, and he enjoyed a good meal. Monday August 24th update. Drain placement happened today! They pulled out 55 mL of fluid during the procedure. After he was done in recovery and got back to the room, his nurse dumped out another 20 mL. They had to place the drain through his gluteal muscle. Entering from the front of the abdomen was not an option because of the location of the abscess. It was located low in the pelvis and the bladder and intestine were too close so it would have been too risky. He ended up sleeping most of the afternoon after the procedure.
