There’s a saying: “With time, all things heal.” But when you lose a sibling, time does not erase the pain it only teaches you how to carry it. Three years ago this month, our lives changed forever. The grief never truly disappears; it comes and goes in waves, sometimes quietly and sometimes without warning, like that distant family member who appears around the holidays. As a truck driver myself, nothing could have prepared me to watch my brother’s truck being driven away with one final load he never had the chance to deliver. In that moment, the truck became more than a vehicle it became a reminder of the life, work, and future that were taken from him. But the truck was only one part of the goodbye. I also had to see my brother one last time before he was unplugged, hold his hand while it was cold and stiff to the touch, and sit before him at his viewing with unanswered questions and disbelief. I watched as he was carried into his own funeral, overcome with emotion, and then saw him taken to the hearse that would carry him to his final resting place. Finally, I watched as dirt was gently placed over his casket. If you have never experienced those moments, you may never fully understand the pain of having a life taken so abruptly because someone else decided to drink and drive. That pain is real, permanent, and carried by everyone left behind—siblings, parents, children, friends, and entire communities. Behind every impaired-driving death is a family forced to live with an absence that never should have existed. And every one of those losses begins with a choice that could have been prevented. Please, never drink and drive. Drinking and driving is not a mistake—it is a choice that can end a life. Put down the keys, call for a ride, or hand them to someone sober. One decision can leave a family grieving forever. Don’t turn your night out into someone else’s last night alive. Long Live Johnta D. James 🕊️ Forever Thirty. Forever Loved. Forever Missed. #LongLiveJohntaDJames #ForeverThirty #DontDrinkAndDrive #DrunkDrivingAwareness #grief
