Cyanuric acid protects pool chlorine from sunlight and provides a reserve that can replenish active hypochlorous acid (HOCl) as it’s consumed. But higher CYA also means you need a higher free chlorine reading to maintain similar active chlorine. At 30 CYA, 3 ppm FC is 10% of CYA. At 80 CYA, it’s only 3.75%. That’s why I test both numbers and dose above my maintenance minimum. SAVE YOUR UNDERWEAR—BE AWARE! 🐍😂 A snake doesn’t have to be venomous to give you a heart attack. This copperhead turned up in a Betta surface skimmer. Apparently, the pool came with wildlife amenities. Why more fall sightings? Mild temperatures can bring some species out during daylight after summer’s heat. Some are hunting, finding mates, or heading toward winter shelter. It depends on the species and weather—not every snake gets busier just because it gets colder. Your yard can offer food and hiding places. Snakes may also fall into pools and have trouble escaping the smooth walls. Help reduce surprise encounters: ✅ Clear brush, leaves, and clutter around the pool. ✅ Trim grass and vegetation around equipment. ✅ Keep woodpiles away from busy areas. ✅ Secure trash and animal feed to discourage rodents. Cancel the mouse buffet! BEFORE reaching into a skimmer, cleaner basket, behind pool equipment, or any sheltered spot—LOOK FIRST. Use a flashlight if needed. Never reach where you can’t see. See a snake? Back away. Keep kids and pets clear. Get qualified help if removal is needed. I appreciate the rat control.
