I took these pictures by myself for my 44th birthday… and then I never posted them. The truth is, my 40s are the prettiest I have ever felt in my life. Not just physically—but in the way I’m finally learning to see myself. After spending so many years questioning myself, picking myself apart, and worrying about what everyone else thought, I finally reached a place where I wanted to celebrate the woman I’ve become. And 44 meant something deeper to me. The number 4 will always carry a special meaning because of my daughter, so I incorporated butterflies into these pictures for her. 🦋 It was my little way of looking toward Heaven and saying… “Look, baby. I survived another year without you. Are you proud of me?” Because some years, surviving deserves to be celebrated too. But after I took them, I got embarrassed. I started thinking about how they might look to other people. Will they think I’m trying too hard? Will it seem like “look at me, look at me”? Is it weird to take birthday pictures of myself at 44? So I kept them to myself. And looking at both the edited and unedited versions now, I realize how sad that is—not because I needed anyone else to see them, but because I let the fear of someone else’s opinion turn a moment of genuine confidence into something I felt I should be embarrassed about. This wasn’t “look at me.” This was “I finally see me.” A woman who has lived. Loved. Lost. Grieved. Changed. Survived. And somehow found pieces of herself again.
