Minister of Labour and Social Security Pearnel Charles Jr. says the restoration of roofs on owner-occupied and family shelters is advancing quickly, with persons being financially enabled to recover from the extensive losses suffered following last year’s passage of the devastating Category 5 Hurricane Melissa. The programme, which falls under the Shelter Recovery Programme at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, provides financial assistance for the reconstruction of homes. According to the Minister, Jamaica has been brave and confident in undertaking this mammoth task. He says that following Hurricane Beryl, there were fewer than 20,000 house assessments conducted over a six- to eight-month period, compared with 118,365 assessments conducted after Hurricane Melissa within the same timeframe.
