Your yearly reminder 😘🖕🏽🪶 Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day! 🤎 #IndigenousPeoplesDay #CosmicallyKT #NativeVoices #DecolonizeHistory #IndigenousResistance A LIL DISCLAIMER FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT: 🪶 Indigenous Peoples’ Day is NOT about erasing history. It’s about telling the TRUTH! Christopher Columbus did NOT “discover” America. Indigenous peoples were already here, with thriving nations, cultures, governments, languages, and traditions. His voyages instead helped usher in centuries of colonization, enslavement, violence, and dispossession. Yet, generations of children have been taught to celebrate him as a hero…as a former educator AND an Indigenous woman, this matters deeply to me. I once had a grown man YELL at me because Indigenous Peoples’ Day fell on the same day as Columbus Day. When I invited him to reflect on WHY recognizing Indigenous peoples mattered, he instead chose to attack my Indigeneity. And THAT is precisely why these conversations matter. ➡️If recognizing Indigenous peoples threatens you, ask yourself WHY? ➡️If learning the truth about colonization feels like an attack on your identity, ask yourself WHYY?? ➡️And if your response to an Indigenous person sharing their experience is to question their identity rather than LISTEN, perhaps there’s more unlearning to do!! Indigenous Peoples’ Day is NOT an attack on anyone’s heritage. It is an affirmation of OUR humanity, sovereignty, resilience, and continued existence! We are NOT relics of the past. We are living, breathing peoples with distinct nations, identities, languages, traditions, and FUTURES. We are STILL HERE! ✊🏽 And our existence is NOT up for debate. You do not have to feel comfortable with history for history to be true. And you do not have to agree with my delivery to recognize the importance of the message. May we raise children who question, listen, think critically, and understand that honoring one people’s humanity does not diminish another’s. With love for my ancestors, my people, and the generations to come. 🙏🏽 Wado & Yakoke 🪶🤎 XOXO, 💋 Auntie KT AND SINCE WE’RE TALKING ABOUT HISTORY, LET’S GET A FEW THINGS STRAIGHT. 📚🪶 Christopher Columbus proposed sailing WEST to reach Asia, hoping to establish a profitable new trade route. He secured financial backing from the Spanish monarchy to make that voyage possible. But here’s what doesn’t always get taught: His calculations were WRONG. Columbus drastically underestimated the Earth’s circumference and the distance between Europe and Asia when traveling west. Scholars at the time questioned his calculations, recognizing that the journey would be far longer than he anticipated. When Columbus arrived in the Caribbean in 1492, he mistakenly believed he had reached islands near Asia. This geographical misunderstanding contributed to his use of the term “Indios,” or “Indians,” for the Indigenous peoples he encountered. Imagine that. Entire nations of people, already living on their ancestral lands, being assigned an identity based on someone else’s misunderstanding of where he was. And while some Indigenous peoples identify as “American Indian” today, others prefer “Indigenous”, “Native American”, or the names of their specific tribal nations. That choice belongs to US FIRST! ✊🏽 This is why historical accuracy matters, and THIS is why we must continue questioning the narratives we’ve inherited!!!🪶🤎
