The major of event of 2020 really showed off how transit in the US was not at all resilient to change. If we want to fix that we have to focus on what is around our transit stops, and that starts with feet first design and last mile connections.

This past Sunday the city of Portland shut down some of its streets in the downtown area so that way people without a car could enjoy them, but this is actually a much watered down version of the event that inspired Portland to begin its Sunday parkways back in 2008. The city of Bogota the capitol of the nation of Colombia began an event called Ciclovia back in the 1970s during the oil crisis but saw massive expansions of it during the 2000s under then mayor Enrique Penalosa. This event directly inspired other cities to join in on creating car free days for their streets, and within Bogota it helped to inspire support for projects like new bike lanes and the creation of the city's bus rapid transit network. These design and policy choices which reveal to us that sometimes we need to take off our blinders that only show us good urban planning in European and East Asian cities because honestly, I am so tired of hearing about the same cities like Amsterdam,Barcelona, or Tokyo. Sure, they're great examples for walkability, but there are so many cities doing a great job that don’t exist within this zone. Particularly, cities in Latin America such as Mexico City,Bogota, and Sao Paulo that have been massive in creating great solutions for building more walkable communities that don't require the immense resources that more developed nations have. Events like ciclovia, the creation of bus rapid transit and using image-based wayfinding are all great examples of how cities outside of the typical urbanist field of view have created great tools that can help cities create walkable communities. Anyways, keep on walking, cycling or taking the bus.
