My hope for the America 250 Downtown Banner Project is that people walk away with a deep sense of pride—not only in the incredible artistic talent of our students, but also in the understanding that everyone contributes to the story of America. That diversity of experiences, perspectives, and creativity is what makes our nation strong. I also hope these banners inspire people to recognize that young people have always helped shape our communities, and they continue to do so today. Every generation has something meaningful to offer, and these banners are a beautiful reminder that our young people aren’t just the future—they’re making an impact right now. Their voices, ideas, and creativity matter. As I often say, Success is a T.E.A.M. Sport—Together Everyone Achieves More. This project is a perfect example of what can happen when students, educators, artists, schools, and community partners unite around a shared vision to create something meaningful for everyone. The America 250 Downtown Banner Project is truly a celebration of partnership and student excellence. It highlights the unique artistic talents of 66 fifth-grade student artists representing 12 Wichita Public Schools - USD259 elementary schools: Enders, Earhart, McCollum, Cessna, Enterprise, Hyde, Peterson, Kelly, Bostic, Irving, Ortiz, and White.   To each of our student artists: Thank you for helping bring history to life through your creativity and for representing Wichita Public Schools with pride. Your work reflects excellence, imagination, and a meaningful connection to the story of America. We couldn’t be more proud of you. #WPSProud #PartnershipsMatter https://downtownwichita.org/about/news/blog

Last night was a grand slam in every sense of the word. Thank you so much to the National Baseball Congress for recognizing my brother, Darryl A. Kelly Jr., as a 2026 NBC Baseball Tournament Terry Brewster Community Volunteer Award honoree. To see his years of service celebrated during the NBC World Series Championship Game at Equity Bank Park was incredibly special. I couldn’t be more proud of my brother. What has always made him special to me is that, in the 40 years I’ve known him, he has never simply done things to or for people—he has always chosen to do things WITH people. It’s easy to do things to or for others, but it takes a different kind of leader to come alongside people, build trust, and work with others shoulder to shoulder toward a common goal. My brother is an activator. He has a rare gift for bringing together people from different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences to accomplish hard things that make our community better. And he’s never afraid to roll up his sleeves and do the work right alongside everyone else. That’s why it was so fitting that he chose to receive this community service award with his family standing beside him on the field. That’s who he is. He has always understood that success is a team sport and none of us accomplish anything alone. Congratulations, Bro. Thank you for continuing to let your light shine, leading by example, and operating with excellence. As a servant leader, proud Air Force veteran, and someone who has always set the standard for the rest of us, you inspire more people than you know. We love you. I know Mom and Dad are proud, and I know our late grandparents would be overjoyed to see the man you’ve become and the legacy you’re building through service to others. Keep shining and letting the Lord use you. You rep our hometown of Newport News, VA well and your impact is being felt in Wichita and far beyond the places where you serve. 🫡
