This stunning historical beauty in Charleston, SC the Williams mansion, formally the Calhoun mansion . I was fortunate enough to be one of the very, very few photographers ever to have unlimited access to the mansion to photograph it for website and images for the a new souvenir book in June 2012. 🏛️ The Williams Mansion — Charleston, South Carolina Formerly known as the Calhoun Mansion Located at 16 Meeting Street in historic Charleston, the magnificent Williams Mansion is a remarkable example of Victorian-era architecture and Southern grandeur. Built between 1875 and 1878 for George Walton Williams, a wealthy Charleston businessman and civic leader, the mansion was designed in the Italianate Revival style. At approximately 24,000 square feet, it became one of Charleston’s most impressive private residences, featuring grand rooms, elaborate architectural details, an observation tower, and a spectacular ballroom. Williams drew inspiration from his travels throughout Europe and other parts of the world, bringing the elegance of the Gilded Age to Charleston. After Williams died in 1903, the property passed to his daughter Sarah and her husband, Patrick Calhoun, a grandson of statesman John C. Calhoun. The mansion eventually became known as the Calhoun Mansion when it was used in connection with a nearby hotel. Despite its former name, John C. Calhoun never lived in this house. Over the decades, the mansion served various purposes, including lodging for travelers, and experienced periods of neglect before undergoing extensive restoration. In 2004, preservationist and collector Howard H. Stahl acquired the property and worked to restore its grandeur. In 2020, it officially returned to its original name, the Williams Mansion, honoring the man who built it. 🎬 Movies and television filmed at the mansion • The Notebook (2004) — The mansion’s elegant interior was used for indoor scenes representing the Hamilton family’s summer home. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, was filmed throughout Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry. • North and South (1985) — This popular television miniseries used the mansion as the Hazard family’s residence. • Gunfight at Branson Creek — The mansion has also been associated with this film production. Today, the Williams Mansion remains an important part of Charleston’s architectural and cinematic history. Its ornate interiors, grand staircase, historic atmosphere, and connection to The Notebook make it especially fascinating to history lovers, photographers, and film enthusiasts. 📍 Location: 16 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina. ✨ The Williams Mansion is a beautiful reminder of Charleston’s Gilded Age—a time when architecture, art, and craftsmanship came together to create homes that were truly works of art. #sc#sco#southcarolinah#charlestonh#charlestonsc
