PART 2: TYPES OF DRUG TESTING By Christopher Mandracchia, Attorney at CDM Law | “Leaflove Lawyers” *not legal advice* Not all drug tests are the same — and MANY people do not understand the difference until it’s too late. The type of test used can dramatically affect: ✅ Detection window ✅ Accuracy ✅ False positives ✅ Whether recent use can actually be proven Here’s a breakdown of the MOST COMMON controlled substance tests: URINE TESTING The MOST common drug test in America. Detects: * Recent to moderate past use * THC can remain detectable for weeks in chronic users Important: A urine test often detects metabolites, NOT current impairment. Used in: * Employment screening * Probation/parole * Family court * Athletic testing BLOOD TESTING Usually used when authorities are trying to prove RECENT use or impairment. Shorter detection windows: * Hours to days for most substances Important: Blood testing is commonly used in: * DUI investigations * Accidents * Emergency medical setting. HAIR FOLLICLE TESTING The LONGEST detection window. Can detect use up to: * 90 days or more Important: Hair testing may NOT prove recent impairment — only historical exposure. Often used in: * High-security jobs * Custody disputes * Government positions 👄 SALIVA TESTING Fast and increasingly popular. Detects: * Very recent use * Typically hours to a few days Commonly used during: * Roadside investigations * Workplace incidents BREATH TESTING Most associated with alcohol cases. But newer technology is attempting to detect THC through breath analysis as well. Legal challenges surrounding reliability are STILL evolving. Remember that a positive test result does NOT automatically prove: ❌ Impairment ❌ Intoxication ❌ Criminal conduct ❌ Parental unfitness ❌ Unsafe employment performance Context matters. The LAW matters. Testing methods matter. This is PART 2 of the series. PART 3 will cover: detection times.
