Just wrapped up an incredible few days in Washington D.C. at the AAPA Leadership & Advocacy Summit 🇺🇸💙 This experience was about so much more than networking and leadership, it was about making sure the voices of PAs are actually heard where healthcare policy is being shaped. Two issues we focused heavily on: 1️⃣ Federal Workers’ Compensation We’re advocating for legislation that would update the federal workers’ compensation program so PAs can be recognized as providers when they get injured on the job, improving access to care for federal employees and better reflecting how PAs practice medicine today. Currently the law states that injured federal workers cannot be treated by PAs when using their workers comp. This is just outdated verbiage because when the law was written, PAs were not even around. 2️⃣ Federal Student Loan Limits for PA Students Changes to federal student lending have raised concerns about PA programs being excluded from the higher loan limits available to students in other professional degree programs. AAPA and PAEA have been actively fighting this issue, including through legal action, because the classification IS ALREADY directly affectinging how much federal financing future PA students can access. Many of these students cannot afford paying for PA school with just private loans due to the minimum requirements needed to take these loans as well as the extremely high interest rate. I had the opportunity to take these issues directly to Capitol Hill and speak with members of Congress about what they mean for PAs, PA students, patients, and the future healthcare workforce. I’m leaving D.C. reminded that advocacy is part of our job as healthcare professionals. If we want a seat at the table, we have to show up. 🩺🏛️ because if you’re not at the table, you are on the menu!!! @aapaorg #LAS2026 #physicianassociate #AAPA #LeadershipAndAdvocacy
