If you’d had told me three years ago that I’d be running a marathon in Berlin, I wouldn’t have believed you. I was out of shape, unhappy, and constantly praying that God would put me out of my misery. And when he didn’t, I tried to myself. And failed. I was embarrassed and upset. And set a date to finish the job. But right around that time, my brother asked if I would run the NYC Marathon with him for Men’s Mental Health. I figured why not. So I started training. And somewhere between the start of training and crossing that finish line in NYC, something changed in me. But the next day, I was served divorce papers. The next year was brutal. But I kept running. And a month after the divorce finalization, I ran the Chicago Marathon for men’s mental health… a few months later, the LA Marathon. Then the Eau Claire marathon. And just a few weeks ago, the Berlin Marathon. I look at these pictures now and see a man who has been through adversity and overcome, one step at a time. And don’t get me wrong, adversity still keeps popping up in my life… I just refuse to quit. So I guess the moral of the story, or at the very least what I’ve learned over the last three years is this: set a goal, strive toward it, don’t quit, and no matter what keep running. Because you can never make it to the end of the dark tunnel, into the light, by standing still.

Who is running the Berlin Marathon? #berlinmarathon

When my first attempt failed, I silently vowed to finish the job. But I didn’t tell anyone. I carried this subtle resignation quietly and alone. I spent weeks thinking about it. It was almost like a guilty pleasure. An escape where, for a moment, my heart was fed a morsel of peace. I wanted to cease to exist. Somewhere between the planning phases and setting another date, my brother reached out to see if I wanted to run the 2024 NYC Marathon with @movember for Men’s Mental Health. I had recently started running as an escape, so I figured why not. That gave me a goal to shoot for. So I started intentionally training… the darkness didn’t disappear overnight, but gradually I started to feel better. We crossed the NYC Marathon finish line together on November 3, 2024. The very next day I was served divorce papers. The next year was dark. I was accused of things I didn’t do, my kids were kept from me, and the divorce devastated me financially. But I had learned to take training, and life, one step at a time. So I kept running. Literally and figuratively. And in September of 2025, I crossed the divorce finish line with equal custody. And in October of 2025, my dad, sister, brother, and I crossed the Chicago Marathon finish line for Movember and Men’s Mental Health. And now, on Sunday, Sept 27, 2026, I’ll be running the Berlin Marathon for the same cause. It’s been quite a ride the last few years. But this is what I’ve learned: There is a light at the end of the tunnel even if you can’t see it right now. Just. Keep. Running.

Will this video reach @ShaqDieselONeal ? Tag him, please! Originally, I was making a semi-mediocre reel every day asking Shaq to run a mile with me for men’s mental health. And then it hit me… Why not make one, cool video of an illustrated Shaq running beside me through Atlanta – where Shaq lives and is active in the community… and the place where I was born and my family is from. So I made this by utilizing a combination of my skills in professional videography and editing, vfx, and ai augmented video. Will it reach Shaq? I guess we will find out.
