I will always choose my children’s wellbeing over keeping other people happy. Toxic behaviour doesn’t become acceptable because someone is family, and protecting your peace doesn’t make you difficult, selfish or unkind. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do for your children is show them that they’re allowed to say no, walk away and protect their own boundaries too. I’m very intentional in my parenting. I think carefully about the values I want to pass on to my boys, the environment I want them to grow up in and the kind of people I hope they become. I also absolutely love the freedom we have as a family to let them explore, express themselves and work out who they are without unnecessary restrictions. I’m not trying to raise five boys who fit neatly into society’s expectations. I’m trying to raise five happy, kind, confident humans who feel comfortable in their own skin. And I’ve learned that you can do everything with the best intentions and someone will still have an opinion. You can be too young, too old, have too many children, parent too differently or make choices that other people simply wouldn’t make themselves. But I’m not raising my five boys to live their lives trying to please everyone else, so I can’t spend mine doing it either. A Halloween day out at Milky Way Adventure Park in North Devon. If you’re looking for something to do with children over half term, a visit to Milky Way Adventure Park is always a good shout for a family day out, especially if you have high energy children! There’s something for everyone, from the rides and indoor play to all the adventures waiting to be discovered, which makes it such a good option when the Devon weather can’t quite make up its mind. We love having places like this on our doorstep, especially during the school holidays when we’re always looking for ways to get out of the house, make memories and keep our little gang entertained. Halloween is such a lovely time of year for family days out, with all the autumn colours, pumpkins and spooky fun. Last year for my birthday, my husband booked 3 nights in a castle. This year? We’re sleeping in a tent in the middle of a storm. Come with me for my birthday, where I woke up and turned 25 because we have an ongoing joke that I don’t age linearly. We headed to Newquay for the day, found ourselves a lovely spot for lunch and I decided to get a tattoo on the spur of the moment as we walked past a tattoo parlour. No planning, no overthinking, just birthday fun. Then we headed to one of my absolute favourite places, the Headland Hotel. The boys and I have always loved the film The Witches, which was filmed here, so imagine my delight when I discovered they’d hired a real witch, The moment we arrived, she whisked the boys away and threatened to turn every single one of them into mice. Naturally, the boys thought this was absolutely brilliant. We spent the loveliest afternoon sitting together, having a drink and watching the waves crash against the coast. Then as all good birthday adventures must, we headed back to our tent just as the storm decided to make itself known. From castle luxury to camping in a storm, I wouldn’t change our little adventures for the world. Although next year, I’m not saying I need a castle again but I’m also not saying I don’t.
