“Good artists copy, great artists steal.” - Pablo Picasso Baya (Fatma Haddad) Mahieddine, 1931 - 98, was an Algerian artist and the forgotten figure behind some of contemporary art’s most famous pieces. Passionate about art from a young age, at 16 she was spotted by French gallerist Aimé Maeght, and invited to Paris where she exhibited her works alongside surrealist masters. She soon became an inspiration to the likes of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. She worked alongside them, and greatly influenced Picasso’s work through her expressive use of color and form, inspiring one of his most iconic projects, ‘Les Femmes d’Alger’. However, as is often the case, her name became overshadowed by her older, male counterparts, who had benefitted so greatly from her inspiration. #contemporaryart #arthistory #arthistorytiktok #bayamahieddine #picasso #womenartists #arttok #foryou #museumtok #fyp #pourtoi
