Reflections on the passing of Duncan Sheik: Though I did not know him personally, he wrote the musical that got me into musical theatre. I’m scared to admit…I don’t typically listen to cast albums. For research? Of course! When I’m in the shower or driving on the highway? Eh. As much as I enjoy musicals, they usually don’t work for me outside of the context of a film or stage. Spring Awakening is the first musical to transcend that barrier for me. After being cast in my local JCC’s production, I found myself blasting “My Junk” and “Totally Fucked” down the highway. “Left Behind” and “Blue Wind” send chills down my spine every time. From infectious bubblegum pop to Green Day-esque punk…this show GOT IT. It bridged the parts of me that I always felt lived in two separate worlds: brooding rock Charity and high brow theatre Charity. Doubt his team will ever see this, but thank you for the music, Duncan. This one’s for you 💜 #singer #broadway #springawakening #musicaltheatre
